While a lot of people are waiting for any of the 1420P, 1820PT, 1820PTZ tablet netbooks to show up around the world, Denosha of the VR Zone forums has already done quite a thorough mini-review of it from earlier this week! Thanks to the device being released ahead of time in Singapore.

His 1820PTZ model had the Pentium SU4100 (dual-core, 1.3GHz) processor, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with a 6-cell 5600mAh battery.

Summary of some key points from his mini-review:

  • Device feels heavier than any 11.6-inch notebook and the thickness and weight of the screen can make the whole machine fall over (only when the screen is tilted way back though)
  • The pressure sensitive screen supports finger and stylus input, however navigating by finger seems less responsive and friction on the screen surface made finger swipes and movement uncomfortable. Switching to finger print input mode improved responsiveness though.
  • Pen mode enables palm rejection and he had no problems writing with parts of his hand on the screen and Microsoft’s software did a good job of recognizing his handwritten letters.
  • The accelerometer provides auto rotation of the screen depending on the mode but it takes 1-3 seconds depending on how many programs you have open which is “still bearable”.
  • Sound was tinny and soft, however there’s S/PDIF output to save you
  • Warranty seals on the back (you won’t get this in the US)
  • 720p / 1080p played well but he seemed to have problems getting smooth playback using shaders (don’t know what he’s doing there).
  • He hasn’t done any tests on battery life but he is guessing 7-8 hours with it’s 6-cell 5600mAh / 63Wh battery. I would say a couple of hours less.
  • Heat is a non-issue

There are also three videos showing multi-touch with Microsoft Surface, an inking test in Microsoft Journal and a look at folding the machine into tablet mode. Here’s the multi-touch test below:

Thanks Andy!

I’m guessing this is the review we’ve all been waiting for. Once again no probs

Yeah I’m pretty much certain I will get this or the butterfly touch. I really want one now!
One thing that I can’t understand is that on the play.com model it has win 7 64 bit pro, yet the version doesn’t have more than 3GB of RAM (for 64 bit) and the SU4100 can’t handle system visualisation used for XP mode (probably the biggest feature of win 7 professional).
Not liking the 160GB HDD but it gives me the excuse to upgrade it to a fast 500GB one, without feeling guilty for throwing out a slow 500GB HDD :-).
I bet this gets the same battery life as the acer 1810TZ so about 7 hours, since the touchscreen is consuming the same power as a webcam, so it won’t be a huge drain on the battery.

“1080p MOV (x264) via MPC-HC (QTLite)”

LOL! You’ll get no hardware acceleration obviously since it’s using the crappy Quicktime decoder(QTLite=Quicktime Lite, not needed since it’s H.264 video in MOV container anyway) instead of the MPC-HC H.264 DXVA decoder. Bad mini-review.

And you don’t need the Edge Sharpen or Sharpen Complex shaders in the first place, you’re already playing HD videos.

You’re expecting GMA 4500MHD, well know to be slow at shader processing in the first place that most games run as slideshows instead of smoothly to be able to handle the shaders post processing? This is why I would never get a CULV notebook with the crappy Intel GMA IGPs. Slow graphics, poor driver quality.

I personally don’t need lots of graphics power and would much prefer a better cpu hence why for me (and certainly not everyone) CULV with 4500 > Atom with ion 2. For many Ion 2 will be better due to longer battery life.

Hi guys, 1820ptz is not officially lauch yet in Singapore. It is actually a bundle package for a local ISP promotion. Sign up the broadband at a slightly higher price and u get to have this tablet. It come with a 500GB harddisk instead.

Spare a thought...
