Update: HP Pavilion DM1 Review up now.

Here’s my unboxing video for the 11.6” HP Pavilion DM1 CULV thin and light notebook which arrived at my cave yesterday. It went on sale here in Japan from yesterday (69,800 yen / $777) and it’s up for pre-order in the UK (Amazon.co.uk for 467 Pounds) but it’s not yet available in the US. The Pavilion DM1 has the same chassis as the HP Mini 311 but switches out the NVidia ION / Atom combo for Intel CULV / Integrated graphics.

My model has the lower end dual-core Celeron SU2300 processor but there is a higher end dual-core Pentium 4100 processor as well, at least in the UK.

My model lacks Wireless N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Other specs include a 11.6” 1366 x 768 display, GMA 4500MHD graphics, 250GB HDD, 2GB RAM (1GB is soldered), 6-Cell battery (10.8V, 4910mAh) and Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.

So far it’s looking nice, fitting in just between the Lenovo IdeaPad U150 and Acer Aspire 1410 in terms of feel and build quality. I’ve already spent most of the day comparing and taking notes on the differences but I’ll get to that comparison after I’ve finished reviewing this notebook.

A few more pictures of the HP Pavilion DM1:

I was surprised it has a fully working SIM card slot (but my model lacks 3G)

How about fan noise ?

Peter 11/13 at 04:08 PM from Tokyo, Japan

very quiet, quieter than the other two.

Thanks for participating!

alpha 11/13 at 04:12 PM

Really? Ok, I will wait for you full review with more details.

Peter 11/13 at 04:22 PM from Tokyo, Japan

I don’t have any device for measuring noise levels but it’s noticeably more quiet than the other and remains quiet when stressed. Very surprising.

Thanks for participating!

alpha 11/13 at 04:27 PM

Yes, that is a suprise, HP are known to have fan issues.

Andy 11/13 at 05:43 PM

Would like to see a direct comparison between this nd a mini 311 (CULV vs ion basically)

Peter 11/13 at 05:50 PM from Tokyo, Japan

yeah me too, going to hit the MyHPMini boards.

Thanks for participating!

Goody goody. My UK model with the SU2300 (dm1-1020SA) should hopefully arrive next Tuesday or Wednesday. I wonder if the black one will perhaps have a matte lid. I loved the deeply textured lid on my old Sony Vaio T250P. No fingerprints. Ever.

I’ll let you know if the UK model also has a SIM slot.

The biggest difference as far as I can tell between the UK and the Japan models is the RAM (UK gets one more gig with the currently preorderable base model - but the HP website does list the 2GB one as well: http://ow.ly/BU69)

I doubt that the UK AC adapter will be any smaller. Slightly strange.. the size of that thing. Nor do I expect the battery to be any different (unless HP took a page from Nokia’s book).

Lastly, that’s one heck of a noisy trackpad mouse button. That thing will wake the dead.

Does it have a glossy or matte display?
HP sales told me that it should be matte, but on the video it seems to be a glossy one.

Zoltan Laszlo 11/16 at 03:04 AM

It’s glossy. No matte option. Disappointing, I know, but until this higher-contrast glossy nonsense dies down, we’ll see fewer and fewer matte display panels being manufactured.

Zuhel 11/16 at 03:16 AM

Well, it is quite disappointing.
First of all, that means that the HP sales were incompetent.
Secontly, based on my sad experience, I never buy any notebooks with glossy displays.
Alas…

alpha 11/17 at 02:31 PM

Peter, is it still quiet? I read reports about the Mini 311 that the fan goes on after a while, maybe it’s the same for DM1.

Zuhel, the only 11.6” netbook that is not glossy is the Samsung N510.

Peter 11/17 at 02:57 PM from Tokyo, Japan

The fan is always on, with the HP Pavilion DM1 and there seems to be either 2-3 fan levels. All of them are very quiet though. Much less than the other 11.6-inchers I tested and overall very pleasing to me, personally.

Thanks for participating!

alpha 11/17 at 06:01 PM

Thanks Peter, are we talking as quiet as ASUS 1002HA (which I have) and/or the Toshiba NB205 ?

Thanks

Peter 11/17 at 06:09 PM from Tokyo, Japan

No, I wouldn’t say as quiet as those two, if my memory serves me well. Those were super quiet. You can easily hear the fan with the DM1.

Thanks for participating!

alpha 11/17 at 06:12 PM

Ok, the fan in the 1002HA can only be heard if I put my head close to the keyboard, in any case, I may consider the DM1, only problem is the glossy screen, which looks very glossy from the pics and videos I have seen.

Peter 11/17 at 06:21 PM from Tokyo, Japan

It is glossy, yep… to what degree, I am unable to discern. I have never really noticed a glossy display being more glossy than another glossy one.

Thanks for participating!
