Update: More details addded about Cedar Trail HD support at the bottom.

More news on the Cedar Trail Atom platform that will come in 2011.

The nettop / desktop based processor, codenamed “Cedarview-D”, will only gain about a 10-15% performance increase over the next-gen Pine Trail platform, and we all know there won’t be any real performance gains with it over the current Atom platform. Intel is really focusing on trying to match ARM by trying to really cut down on power consumption and size.

The other bit of info is that the Cedarview-D processors, at least, will return to SO-DIMMs (DDR3) where the next-gen Pine Trail platform will switch to DIMMs for RAM.

This just came in: More details about Cedar Trail HD support which we heard before. We’re looking at resolution support for up to 1080p @ 120Hz or 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz with support for up to two independent displays. There’s also support for eDP, HDMI 1.3a, DisplayPort 1.1a as well as legacy interfaces VGA and LVDS. There will be support for DirectX 10.1 / Open GL 2.1 / 3.0 but no support for DirectX 11.

Maybe we are looking at a new incarnation of Moore’s law here.  The processor speed stays roughly constant, but power consumption is halved every two years.

I think intel is actually trying to keep atom crippled so it has an excuse to kill it off. It was reluctant about making it in the first place, so it doesn’t surprise me.

It’s official, I’m never buying another Atom netbook. CULV it is.

Spare a thought...
