Dell posted a brief history of the Alienware M11x a couple of days ago. It’s been on the papers for at least 5 years codenamed as “Phantom” but they never had the technology previously to release a small portable and powerful gaming laptop, until now, thanks to Intel’s CULV platform. (It’s using an unnamed Core 2 Duo processor and switchable Nvidia GT335M graphics, of course).
What I missed was a video below showing off Left 4 Dead 2 playing at around 50 FPS, at the native 1366 x 768 resolution, high settings with no AA. I’d say I’m stoked but I have no idea if that’s a good frame rate for this game. There have been many videos of the M11x posted from CES 2010 and I recall Xavier from Notebooks.com getting around 30 FPS in Modern Warfare 2.
So, we’ve got a price tag starting at $799 and an arrival in Spring sometime. I’ll pump out the specs again:
Alienware M11X specs:
- 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display
- Intel CULV Core 2 Duo processor (not mentioned which)
- Switchable Nvidia GT335M graphics (1GB RAM) - does not require restart
- Backlit keyboard (customizable)
- VGA, HDMI, FireWire, DisplayPort outputs
- 3x USB, VGA, LAN, Card reader, 2x headphone and 1x mic jacks
- 6-cell Battery
- 6.5 hour battery life (integrated graphics)
- 2 - 2.5 hours (discrete graphics)
- Weight: Just under 4 pounds

Oh, and the official M11x promo video went up last week:

I believe the processor will be the mid range SU4100 - I think there is a typo in this article as the U4100 doesn’t exist.

Hope this sheds some light.
Thanks Andy. Makes me wonder if they will be offering multiple processor options, since the mentioned price is the base price.
Thanks for participating!
They do offer multiple processors, a dual core as well. I don’t know if that effects battery life though…
