Update: Sascha over at Netbooknews.de says ASUS will be bringing a Moblin based Eee PC in October.
According to Imad Sousou, director of Intel’s Open Source Technology, which is behind the Moblin OS, we could be seeing the first netbook, or netbooks pre-installed with Moblin V2.0 as early as this month, at IDF 2009.
As to who will release the first Moblin V2.0 netbook, it’s anybody’s quess right now. I’m hoping it’s one of the big players in the game.
Here’s a quote from ZDNet UK’s interview with him:
[As a] release from an open-source perspective, it’s a milestone more than it is a product release — product releases come from OS vendors and OEMs [manufacturers]. Soon you will start to see OEMs shipping netbooks with Moblin. You will see an announcement over the next week or two.
The final v2.0 (it’s been in Beta) will be available to download over the next couple of weeks. They will then do releases every 6 months like Canonical does with Ubuntu. I hope they’ve come a long way since the beta versions because while the interface was very exciting it gave off the feeling of a very unfinished OS, when I took a look at it.
