CNET had a pretty full on discussion with Google CEO Eric Schmidt about a whole range of Google related topics and they do touch upon Google Chrome OS for netbooks at one point.
Right now Google is pushing both Android AND Google Chrome OS for netbooks, but when asked why we need Chrome OS when Android is really making strides (everywhere except on netbooks) the CEO says what you could probably guess (at 15:11). Android is targeted at phones and Google Chrome OS is targeted for netbooks where there’s more power, screen resolution and users have keyboards.
They plan to release the first open-source version of Google Chrome OS later this year, and next year it’ll start shipping (on netbooks). They are hoping the open source community will help to make it better.
