How To Switch To Default Desktop Mode on Jolicloud

Just discovered this cool tip over at Luis’ Blog (also in the Jolicloud Wiki). You can get back to the standard desktop you see with all Linux distros and even switch between the Jolicloud / Ubuntu Netbook Remix desktop and the default Ubuntu desktop with the click of a button.

How to get back to the default Ubuntu desktop:

  • Go to accessories -> terminal
  • Enter “aptitude install desktop-switcher” in the terminal
  • Go to and click on preferences -> switch desktop mode (icon)

There you go, now you’re back to the default Ubuntu desktop. Now you have the power of standard Ubuntu and the support for netbooks that you get with Jolicloud.

You can go back by clicking the menu at the top and “system” -> “preferences” -> switch desktop mode. You will need to re-select the jolicloud theme by going to “preferences” -> “appearances” then choose the jolicloud theme to get everything looking and functioning normally.
