HP Japan is hoping to change the wireless industry by offering contract free, 3G enabled netbooks (and other HP products) at subsidized prices of about $50 - $100 with 100 mins of free use and a pay-as-you-go pricing scheme.
Like most countries, Japan has the usual 2-year contract with a huge external USB dongles costing $40 - $60 a month. Internal 3G enabled netbooks are extremely rare here. Also Wi-Fi spots are not plentiful and free like other countries.
The low profit margins of netbooks is cited as one reason for HP attempting this new idea.
I’ve been waiting so long for something like this to arrive and I hope it works out!

This sounds like a much better idea. I’ve liked the idea of 3G internet, but don’t wanna be stuck into an outrageously expensive contract, especially since 3G is something I’d only use semi-rarely where WiFi isn’t available.
