I’ve taken the FunTwist Fiono 330 nettop for a test run with some 1080P HD video and it works fine and dandy.
I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 6 but there are problems at the end of the install and once it has booted up. Unlike in Windows 7 my Buffalo Wireless N Adapter was not recognized and an update screwed up Ubuntu. At the end of the install, strangely, the Fiono 330 was too hot to touch! though it hasn’t occured since. It may be due to the dvd drive I had laying on top of the vent.
Anyway, after those annoyances I just stuck on Windows 7 and now everything is smooth.
The insides of the Fiono 330 are pretty cramped, I don’t see much that can be done. There’s an extra SATA port but it’s kind of pointeless in that you can’t fit anything else it there. I was surprised by the lack of Wi-Fi, and more so by the fact that the Fiono 330 uses a USB powered Wi-Fi module rather than the standard PCI-e cards you get in netbooks and most other nettops.
I only found a few sources and that was on Ebay priced at around $30 - 40. You can of course just use a Wi-Fi adapter with no problems.
I have one HUGE annoyance and that is the loud 6mm fan (not sure if the video picks it up) and it is driving me crazy. The BIOS includes fan speed options but it doesn’t have any effect. I’m waiting for a response from Fiono on how to solve this issue.
After this I will probably compare some performance specs between my single core Acer Aspire Revo and this dual core Fiono 330. Probably not much difference between them. I feel no difference between this dual core Atom 330 nettop and a single-core Atom 220 nettop.
