NorhTec, the folks who brought you the $200 Gecko EduBook which can run on standard AA batteries, is back at it again with their second offering, the Xcore Info Pad tablet.
Specs seem to be the same if not similar: 1GHz XCore86 processor and 1024 x 600 8.9” display (but with a resistive touchscreen of course) with a claimed 400-nit display which is amazingly bright for such a portable device, if true. Speakers on the back. Includes a microphone. Fanless, too. 3x USB ports, VGA out, Wi-Fi and Audio in/out.
The XCore86 processor is x86 compatible so it runs any Windows OS as well as any Linux OS. They had Ubuntu running on it in the video.
Like the Gecko Edubook, this tablet can run off rechargable AA batteries and the power cable plugs directly into the base of this tablet, there is no power brick as it is built into the tablet. Battery life with AA batteries is good for up to 4 hours.
Will be priced at $295 and should be available in November or December.
