Update 2: Looks like the overclocking ability may depend on what type of RAM you have. Will be trying out different types of RAM.

Update 1: Upgrading to 2GB RAM disables the overclocking option, I can confirm this is true as I just tested it. I’m using the latest BIOS version 0208.

Here’s a cool feature of the ASUS Eee PC 1101HA 11.6” mini-notebook. You can easily change the overclocking percentage of the SHE (Super Hybrid Engine) by up to 30%!

Now, overclocking on Eee PC’s have been there since the beginning with the SHE, but you are limited to whatever speed ASUS set, unless you are willing to invest more time and tinker with your netbook.

Also, the direct competitor to the 1101HA, the Acer Aspire 751 can also be overclocked but obtaining the information to do so can be very time consuming and I never saw anyone matching the speeds on the 1101HA.

If you go into your BIOS, under the advanced tab, you will see an option for overclocking SHE. Values range from 5% - 30%. Of course, why would you select anything other than 30%, right? The default is 10%.

This only effects SHE’s “Super Perfomance” mode. The lower speed is when the CPU is not stressed.

SHE Overclock 30% - 1.0 GHz or 1.7GHz
SHE Overclock 20% - 9.5 GHz or 1.6GHz
SHE Overclock 10% - 0.9 GHz or 1.5GHz (default)

I think I notice an overall speed improvement with Windows, but I’ll give it more time because my mind could be playing tricks with me. The highest of high HD videos are still completely unplayable in the browser though.

One other side effect is that the fan becomes noisy, if you are in a quite room. If you have some other noise source in the room you probably can’t hear it. You can easily control the fan with EeeCtl to silence the fan. I’m not sure how safe an 30% overclock is with the fan running at 30%. Only time will tell, heh.

Hi Peter,

I’m impatiently waiting your Asus vs. Acer 11- inchers side by side comparison.
Congrats on the new look,
I am totally netbooked :)

I don’t have the 751 anymore, I had planned to do a side-by-side comparison but the 1101HA was delayed a week over here. I can still do a comparison just not with pictures.

Thanks for your support :)

Thanks for participating!

Do you know how much the overclocking affects battery life?  Thanks.

I’ll get to that next, just need to do some battery tests and real life testing…

Thanks for participating!
