Update: Benchmark results corrected.. best case scenario just under 30 FPS. Read the comments section in this post.
The folks at Blogeee.net run through some benchmark videos on the ION Powered 11.6” Samsung N510.
First up is a test of Doom 3. All details are turned to low. Frame rates get very jerky very often with lots of minute pauses now and then. 18 fps at 640 x 480 and 16 fps at 1024 x 768. That seems just barely playable.
Which is no surprise. I’ve been through all those with the Acer Aspire Revo. Don’t expect to be able to play any recent games decently even older games such as Doom 3. ION is great for 1080P HD video and for those fancy 3D effects in Windows 7.
Then there’s a 3D Mark benchmark and a look at some photoshop like program.

What about setfsb? You could probably play doom3 if you did a little bit of oc-ing.
Really must be the N270 that’s holding this system back, I might consider waiting for a netbook/thin+light with a CULV + dedicated graphics instead. The benchmarks for the 9400M are much higher when put on a system with a better processor…
Even if you increased the average frame-rate by 30% by overclocking (which would be a huge increase), it would still be a marginal playing experience at best. And it would probably be a slide-show for intense battles with lots of enemies. I’m sure some games would be fine, because they scale better to slow hardware. Just don’t expect a netbook gaming machine just yet…
First Benchmarks of DualCore-Atom (330) + ION systems in HTPCs showed only a very small gain in 3D Performance. I.e. 1300 3Dmarks06 in the Acer Revo versus the 1410 3Dmarks06 in Zotacs 330+ION ITX systems.
If you put the ION (or 9400m) into a really powerful Notebook (2,8ghz Core2Duo, DDR3 Ram…) you see what this chip is capeble, and what not:

Finally! I’ve been wanting to know how much more oopf the ion added to the N270… not quite as much as I would hope.
