Spent a couple of hours so far checking out the ASUS Eee Box EB1501. Loving the combination of Windows Media Center and the remote control. I don’t have to use the keyboard and mouse. Great if you’re sitting back and relaxing. Seems very quiet so far. I’ll talk more about usage later as I spend more time with it, but for now here is how to take your Eee Box EB15101 apart. Extremely easy to take apart, only takes a couple of minutes.

Nice system, is that a half length mini-PCIe slot in there ?

Peter 02/02 at 07:40 PM from Tokyo, Japan

Yep, only one and it’s got a Wi-Fi card there.

What model optical drive is inside?  I’m hoping to be able to upgrade mine to a bluray drive in the near future. Would anyone have any suggestions on compatible bluray drive models?

Peter 02/06 at 12:59 PM from Tokyo, Japan

The other side where the optical drive is housed will require some prying to take off. I’ll look into it.

Thanks, that would be much appreciated. I’m hesitant to void my warranty only to find out I can’t replace the drive anyway!!

Phil 02/11 at 10:29 AM

Any luck finding out more about the optical drive?

Peter 02/11 at 03:54 PM from Tokyo, Japan

I’m unable to easily access the bottom half where the optical drive is housed, at least not without some kind of guide or trying myself and probably snapping something off.

Thanks for participating!

Bummer. Maybe it was a deliberate move if they intended to release a model with blu-ray.

Peter 02/12 at 03:35 PM from Tokyo, Japan

Don’t know if you’ve seen this but apparently there is a Blu-ray version of the EB1501 coming to Switzerland some time this year:
