There was some event held here in Japan, Wireless Japan 2009, which mostly seemed to cover smartphones / phones and other wireless technologies but I did notice Qualcomm’s concept smartbook, the Wistron PBook popping up again, and a release in Japan seems very unlikely this year.

I also an Android powered network media player which is capable of playing HD video.

That Android media player is very interesting, pity there is so little info. The GUI is reasonably nice if a little plain but more importantly its OpenGL ES accelerated which is not the case for most media streamers & why they tend to have crappy UI’s.

The XBMC team are working on an Arm port too it would be pretty cool to be able to install that on one of these boxes.

No not heard about this Android media player till now, looks like first attempt at making a commercial product from the BeagleBoard project.

(BeagleBoard is OMAP 3530 EVM which has Arm Cortex A8 CPU and PowerVR SGX GPU)

Actually its rather unusual to go with Android as most media streamers/networked media tanks use SoC’s from well know maker Realtek/Sybas that uses linux OS with closed source codecs like Popcornhour or WDTV. However they lack OpenGL ES support so maybe that was part of the reasoning for going with Android, maybe cheaper too but the software needs work.

Spare a thought...
